Father’s Day is coming up! It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all the wonderful men in your life, dad or not! And what better way to celebrate than to make a fantastic meal for your guy?
Every year when I ask my hubby what he wants for Father’s Day, his only request is that we have Sloppy Joes for dinner. He’s very low-maintenance! Because that’s all he ever asks for, I’ve always tried hard to make the most amazing Sloppy Joes ever. And, I think I’m pretty successful! Would you like to make some as well? Whether for Father’s Day or not these Sloppy Joes are the best! In fact, they are mouth-wateringly delicious!
The original recipe came from my grandma, who was an amazing cook. I’ve modified a few things, but most of her recipe is still intact.
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1/8 cup diced celery
- 2 cans tomato soup
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard
To make, brown together the beef, onions, bell pepper, and celery
Drain the liquids, then add the rest of the ingredients
Cook until the vegetables are tender and the mixture is thickened (I usually let it simmer on low for around 30 minutes or so).
This is a little thing I do to make it extra-special: Hollow out some hoagie rolls and place them on cookie sheets
Stuff each side of the hoagie rolls with the cooked Sloppy Joe mixture
Top the mixture with shredded cheese and broil the Sloppy Joes in the oven for a few minutes—just long enough for the cheese to melt.
And voila! Sloppy Joes delicious enough—and sloppy enough—to make your mouth water!
We do close the top and bottom and serve them as closed-faced sandwiches. I should have gotten another picture, but I’m not joking when I say that no one wanted to wait long enough for me to get another shot!
Here’s to a great Father’s Day!
