I have to admit, I owe this tip 100% to one of my good friends. She and her kids were over for lunch a couple months ago when she showed this to me. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but after trying it her way, I was totally convinced! My friend says she thought this was something that everyone knew, but I sure didn’t know it, so now I’m sharing it with you! Maybe I really am the only one who didn’t know this, but I kind of doubt it.
It might seem like a silly tip, but when you use lettuce as much as we do, it is kind of a big deal! My kids and I have been really into lettuce wraps lately, so this is something we use all the time now. And I can tell you, not only is it an easy way to wash your lettuce but it really does keep it crisp and fresh! It also makes it easy to get the lettuce leaves off in whole pieces, which is nice for us because we like those whole lettuce leaves for lettuce wraps. Excellent!
Okay, this is what you do:
Start with your lettuce head (duh).
You’re going to find the part on the bottom where the stalk used to be (or is it stem?)
Then you’re going to take the lettuce head and slam it downward onto your counter (or table or whatever), right on top of the stem piece. It takes a little force, but not a ton. No need to go too crazy here. Unless you’re really mad. In that case you can use it to get out your aggression.
After you do that, flip your lettuce head over and separate that stalk from the rest of the lettuce head. It should come off pretty easily now.
Now you can rinse your lettuce easily, through the hole where the stalk piece used to be. Rinse it thoroughly.
Once you’ve rinsed your lettuce to your satisfaction, grab a few paper towels. Put the lettuce on the paper towels (with the stem-hole down) and let it dry like that on your counter. It will probably take a couple hours to dry completely.
When the lettuce is dry, wrap it in the moist paper towels that it was sitting on and place everything in a Ziploc (or other type of sealed) bag.
And that’s it! Put it in your fridge and store like normal! Your lettuce will stay nice and crisp for good amount of time, and it is already washed and ready to go!
So there you have it! I hope this makes your life a little better, like it has mine. It really is the little things, isn’t it?
